VCAL work experience student – Tyler

Tyler is a Year 11 student with no short of ambition or passion for his role at PARC. He is undertaking the VCAL Sport and Recreational Program and has previously completed his Certificate II in Sport and Recreation. As part of the VCAL Program he is currently completely his Certificate III in Sport and Recreation on Wednesday’s, whilst working at PARC every Friday, for the duration of the year.

He first visited PARC as part of the ‘Youth Group Program’ run by the Frankston City Council during the school holidays. Tyler later applied to undertake the practical side of his VCAL program at PARC, and from the moment he received the call in February notifying him of his acceptance, he has been overwhelmed with joy. He loves coming into PARC every Friday, motivated by the combination of his love for sport and fitness, which is encapsulated by the amazing “family feeling” that PARC has to offer. Since being fortunate enough to become a part of the PARC Family in February, he now labels PARC as his “second-home”, describing this opportunity as “an absolute beauty”.

Tylers’ role at PARC is to be the first point of contact for members when visiting the gym. He is responsible for general enquires and overall assistance with operation of the gym floor. However, Tylers’ work ethic extends himself far beyond these roles, always offering to help with any maintenance or cleaning of the gym, motivated to broaden his experiences. He willingness to be involved has helped him develop valued relationships with members, “loving the opportunity to meet locals at the gym” and help them achieve their goals.

Tyler has been fortunate enough to observe some of our highly qualified Personal Trainers, identifying the different coaching styles and dedication which they bring to their job. In particular, Tyler speaks highly of Jayden, who has “taken (him) under his wing”, giving him guidance throughout his time at PARC. Jayden has mentored him, allowing him to sit in on PARC Start Assessments, and giving him opportunities to have hands-on practical experiences on the gym floor. Jayden has helped install confidence within Tyler and he “can’t thank him enough” for providing a realistic pathway for his own development.

Tyler has been overwhelmed by the sense of community created by PARC employees. When he compares his experiences with other work place experiences, he significantly identifies the difference is; PARC employees have a broader, positive “team focus” rather than an “individual focus”. Tyler has observed leadership skills portrayed by employees, now taking these observations into his own practical activities outside of PARC.

Working at PARC every Friday has helped Tyler decide what he wants to do for the remainder of his schooling and beyond. He now has a deeper understanding of employment prospects within the Health and Fitness Industry, loving the idea of potentially becoming a Personal Trainer. The idea of future employment at PARC would be an “absolute dream” for Tyler, due to the amazing experience he is having and the “family feeling” PARC has. He would “100% recommend” PARC to any VCAL Sport and Recreational student.
