Be safer around water this summer

Spring is here and summer is around the corner, so there is no better time than now to sign up to swimming lessons – equip your child, or yourself as an adult, with vital water safety skills and build a lifelong love of water.

According to a report from Royal Life Saving Australia that was conducted earlier this year, there has been a significant decline in swimming competency among school-aged children. Findings found:

  • Nearly half of year 6 students don’t meet basic swimming standards, with 48% of Year 6 students not able to swim 50 metres and tread water for two minutes, a fundamental benchmark that should be achieved by age 12.
  • Swimming skills continue to decline in high school, with 39% of Year 10 students still not meeting the Year 6 benchmark, showing that without continued practice, children’s swimming abilities deteriorate rather than improve with age.
  • One in ten children aged 5-14 have never had swimming lessons, creating a significant gap in water safety skills and education.

Have you heard of Habit Stacking? 🤔

It's a great way to add movement into your day by pairing small exercises with habits you already do - helping you be active and achieve 30-20-2, even when life is busy!

You can incorporate simple exercises into your daily task, such as:
- Squats while the kettle boils - turn waiting time into movement time.
- Calf raises while brushing your teeth - two minutes of strength, twice a day.
- Lunges down the hallway - every trip becomes a mini workout.
- Marching on the spot while folding laundry- complete some of your vigorous or moderate exercise every trip.
- Glute squeezes while sitting at your desk - perfect for busy workdays.

Remember, all movement counts 🙌
